I just received the following message from Andrei Frolkin:

 QUOTE

Dear all,

I have just received sad news from Andrei Kornilov’s son about the sudden death of his father. Andrei Kornilov died tonight of brain hemorrhage. Just yesterday we were discussing an article we had been working on for about a year as well as the presumably encouraging outcome of his brain scan.

Sad news: Toma (Thomas) Garai has passed away (1935-2012).

I learned this from StrateGems 59 (recently published), wherein Mike Prcic states:
"The sad news of Toma’s death came to me in a letter from his family which I received in May...
Toma was born in Arad, Romania, and he was of Hungarian descent. Toma published over 1300 problems, mostly helpmates. He was awarded the title of FIDE Grandmaster of Chess Composition (1996 in Israel). He was also International Judge for helpmates [in 1987].."

Here is the first of several problems quoted in SG (which also made it into the FIDE Album):

I was sent this:
http://www.tributes.com/show/Thomas-C.-Garai-90748250

Is this a typo or did Mr. Garai already die in early 2011?

EDIT: Also apparently confirmed by Social Security Death Index. Or maybe one copied from the other...

Steven Dowd recently informed me of this, as well.
If the date of his passing (Sunday, Jan 30, 2011) is indeed correct (as it appears to be), it certainly leaves us all wondering...

It is indeed terrible news. I've known Denis for so many years I can't believe he's gone.
If you have a facebook account there's a hommage page created by his students at http://www.facebook.com/events/409206299131290/

Does anybody have more information?
Marco

Brian Stephenson writes on the BCPS site :

"Our Italian friend Ivo Fasiori emails us to inform us that the veteran Italian chess composer Professor Oscar Bonivento died in the hospital in Bologna on 1st October. As well as his composing activities, Bonivento edited chess problem columns and produced many books about Italian chess composition and composers. ..."

Just heard from John Rice the sad news that British solver and composer Tony Lewis died last night. He had been in hospital for some weeks. Tony was an ex-President of the BCPS and was also our Treasurer for many years, retiring in April this year. It is fair to say that the BCPS owes it robust financial situation to Tony's careful stewardship over all of those years.

Tony was a close friend for many years and I shall miss his wisdom. He gave me a great deal of support with the British Chess Solving Championship, at which he and Sally were regular helpers.

My condolences to Sally and the rest of his family.

I received this shocking email from Mike Prcic, about an hour ago:

Dan Meinking 1960-2012

Dan Meinking died of heart attack, yesterday. His brother Randy told me over the phone, that Dan called 911 and complained of shortness of breath. He died in the hospital the same night. Funeral arrangements are being made as of now.
Needless to say, this is a huge shock to all of us and an enormous loss to our small chess problem community. I am planning to have a tribute to Dan in SG61...

Saddened beyond belief,
Mike Prcic

I'm very shocked indeed... Dan and I exchanged hundreds of emails this year, as he helped me a lot in the writing of my recent SG article, and he was the Director of the last chessproblem.ca thematic tourney, co-organized by Cornel and I.

Bad bad news, can't trust it.

This is horrible news.

I very much appreciated his postings here.

Here is a collection of his chess problems.
http://parryserieshub.chessproblems.ca/pdf/DanMeinkingChessProblemCollection2011v2.pdf

On 8 December 2010, three days after gifting me a copy of his Alpha Sleuth volume 2 database, he wrote to me:
 QUOTE
I have a handful of endgames in my personal collection. The best are:

(1) =2nd/3rd Prize (Chess Life 1983), which was equalled by some guy
named Richard Becker. Perhaps you've heard of him. :-)

(2) A joint with Pal Benko, which suprisingly got no award. Go figure.

I don't pay too much mind to awards. My collection has non-award items
that I think are good (or a bit better than that), and omits items
that got Prizes or HMs.

I still have a local copy of his Alpha Sleuth solving tool to use with the database he sent me, sadly the Alpha Sleuth website was discontinued a while ago.

Bad bad news, indeed.

For me, Dan was more than a gifted problem composer... he was a great teacher (who helped introduce me to the art of problem composition), a mentor, and a good friend (always... for many years... no matter what).

He will be missed, beyond words.

Shocking. Such a talented composer. Will be missed very much on these pages.

Milan Vukcevic, Toma Garai now Dan. Three leading composers of USA leaving in a short span of time.

I was lucky to closely communicate and collaborate with Dan for more than a year
and had opportunity to value his great talent and remarkable personality.

I was lately in touch with Dan regarding the chess fonts he created and got from him all the help I needed.

Really too sad, too early... I didn't know Dan personally, I can just read what you've written to understand whom we've lost.. I've written a short post and quoted some of you, I hope you don't mind - http://juliasfairies.com/dan-meinking-1960-2012/

As I wrote earlier, Mike Prcic is preparing an article for SG61 with tributes and selection of Dan's best problems.
All of you who have known him personally, or through online correspondence like me, you are welcome to send your tributes (ASAP) and photos of Dan if you have any, at Mike's email: tuzlak {at} aol.com
